President Obama White House Correspondence Dinner

The President of the United States does a stand-up comedy routine at the yearly White House Correspondence Dinner.  With a sarcastic, Voltaire-esqe spirit, President Obama makes some notable remarks.

Last year President Obama commented on Michelle Bachman's criticism that his approval of gay marriage may bring the judgement of God on America

“Just this week, Michele Bachmann actually predicted that I would bring about the biblical end of days,” Obama said in his speech Saturday night. “Now that’s a legacy. That’s big. I mean Lincoln, Washington — they didn’t do that.”

More recently, President Obama remarked during his monologue that "this will be his last and maybe THE last correspondance dinner" and that "the end of the Republic never looked so good".

Tell me how in any context; the President of the United States, who has made a sacred vow to defend the US Constitution and freedom and liberty of its citizens; joking about the "end of the Republic" is at all supposed to be humorous?  However, my friends say that thy thought the comment was a reference to Trump possibly being elected POTUS.
